Background to the Exhibits

Yogyakarta, a self governing province (special administrative area) is considered to be not only the cultural heart of Java but the whole of Indonesia. From the 16th century it was the seat of the mighty Javanese empire or Mataram until in 1755, Mataram divided into the Sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Yogyakarta is the only remaining Sultanate in Insonesia and the Sultan’s palace is the oldest in the country.

Situated close to Yogyakarta in Central Java, Borobudur is a ninth-century Mahayana Buddhist Temple which is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage, with Indonesian Buddhists celebrating Vesak at the monument annually. Probably abandoned  following the fourteenth century decline of Buddhist and Hindu Kindoms in Java and the Javanese conversion to Islam, Borobudur was brought to the world’s attention in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then Brithis ruler of Java who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. The largest restoration project was undertake between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, following which the monument was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Borobudur is Indonesia’a single most visited tourist attraction
